GYG are very proud to have been awarded the 2018 Professional Career Award by AENIB (Associació d’Empreses Nàutiques de les Illes Balears)
The award was presented yesterday at their 11th Awards Ceremony and General Assembly held at Palma Aquarium.
AENIB spent time talking with Andrew Clemence (CCO) and Peter Brown (COO) about the activity of GYG, the current nautical outlook and future plans:
How do you value this award from AENIB?
We are very proud and honoured to have received the recognition of an association as committed to the sector as yours. It is an honour for us to be recognised for our work.
I would like to ask you about the origin and the trajectory of your company..
Pinmar has been offering its services for more than 44 years. Over time we have been growing and incorporating new investors and we are currently the most recognised brand worldwide in terms of yacht painting, especially for large yachts. In 2012 we merged with Rolling Stock, a company founded in 1989 in Palma, to create the Global Yachting Group (GYG). Within GYG are the companies Pinmar, Pinmar USA, Pinmar Supply, Rolling Stock, ACA Marine and Techno Craft. On July 5 of 2017, GYG entered the London Stock Exchange AIM market, and as far as we know, we are one of the first companies in the Spanish yacht services sector to be listed.
I imagine that to get to where you are, you must work to very high quality standards..
In recent years, Pinmar established a quality standard in terms of paint application – the Pinmar Paint Standard. Until that moment there was no definite quality standard in the industry. One of the main reasons that led us to implement this standard was to value the great work of our employees, their diligence and their continuous effort to take their work to a higher level. Our workers are truly artisans, 4 of them have been with us for more than 35 years and keep in mind that we started with only 8 workers.
Another objective of the standard is to offer a quality guarantee to our customers. When a client previously signed a contract with a company to paint a boat, the owner or the boat manager took the risk that the job was not to his liking, but with our standard they know perfectly well what they will receive. For us it is a very important issue that our clients can have the peace of mind that they will receive exceptional service.
And now, how many people do you emply?
In winter, which is our peak season, we work with almost 500 people, including subcontractors. In this sense, I would like to repeat that the most important asset we have is our human resources, people mainly from Mallorca. Thanks to them we have been able to paint and fair a large part of the largest yachts in the world in Germany, in France, in England, in Russia … and across almost the whole world.
In how many countries do you have a presence?
We are currently working in Germany, France, Holland, Turkey, Italy, the United States, England and we also have different bases in Spain. Those are the main projects but we also have the ability to send teams almost anywhere in the world. Due to the standard we have, there are customers who call and expressly request our services, they do not want anyone else to touch their boat, even if they are on an island in the middle of the Pacific. Last year we sent an entire team to Palau and painted the boat right there. Logistically it is a challenge, but it was not an insurmountable problem. We have painted ships in Moscow, in Kuala Lumpur, in Malta … in many strange and different places. Right now we have a team in the Bahamas doing some repairs, and another in Antigua.
